Whitby Shark Fishing - Porbeagle sharks and Tope
Traditionally boat anglers at Whitby have targeted mainly cod,
however a recent research article undertaken by The North Eastern
Sea Fisheries Committee has suggested that Whitby along with other
north east coast ports could benefit from a diversification of
fishing methods to target species of shark living off our coast. One
of the first Whitby Skippers to try such fishing methods with any
level of success has been Malcolm Pitman on his Whitby boat sea
spray Charters.
For 2 weeks in the late July and early
August 2006 Malcolm was joined on his boat by members of the
National organisation save our sharks. week one's team consisted of Dave
Morton (save our sharks regional representative), Leon Roskilly (Sea
Anglers Conservation Network), Norman Berry (editor of the sea
angling news), and Doctor Nigel Procter (marine biologist and head
of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire association of sea anglers - YALASA).
For the first few days of week 1 fishing was tough
for the save our sharks team. Mackerel the main bait fish for the
shark was in short supply and the days passed by with nothing
significant to report. Then on the final day the action started.
Leon was the first to hook a shark but his line parted and the first
battle was lost. Then Dave hooked into one but again the shark was
the winner. It proved to be third time lucky for the lads when
Norman Boated a porbeagle of Roughly 150 Lbs
Week 2 saw the team change with Nigel Heading
off on holiday and Leon and Norman returning to their homes in the
south of the country. In their place arrived more friends of Dave
Morton in the form of Ian Burrett (Scottish charter skipper and shark
expert) and Richard (spotty dog tackle shop). On their first day of
the week They boated a fantastic whitby shark estimated to be in
excess of 200 pounds - this time the luck angler being Richard of
Spotty dog tackle.
Unfortunately The rest of the weeks fishing was blown off due to bad
weather and the lads all returned to their homes at different ends
of the country. Despite the dissapointment caused by the weather the
team were happy with their week at Whitby with Malcolm and I believe
their experiences with the Whitby sharks by far outweighed their
expectations . The team are eager to return early next year.
Whitby sea spray Skipper Malcolm Pitman is eager to return to the
Shark Grounds off Whitby and will be running charter trips
specifically targeting the Whitby Sharks throughout the coming
months. If you should wish to live the shark experience yourself why
not ring Whitby Sea Spray skipper Malcolm (details on the contacts
page) and arrange the next Whitby Shark Fishing trip.
